Daniel Matej was one of the musicians who participated in the Hugh Davis concert.


Daniel Matej studied music theory and composition at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava where he later enrolled in the Ph.D. programme. He spent a significant amount of time abroad: in 1989 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de la Musique in Paris and in 1990 until 1992 at the Royal Conservatory (Koninklijk Conservatorium) in The Hague, where he studied with Luis Andriessen. He is the cofounder of several ensembles, among them VENI, Požoň sentimentál, VAPORI del CUORE and appendix CONSORT. In addition, he founded new radio programme entitled “The Studio of New Music.” He has participated in international workshops, the International ISCM Composer‘s Workshop in Poland and the Dartington Summer Music School. In 1994, Matej co-founded the Slovakian section of the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music). From 1995 through 1996 he lived as composer-in-residence as part of the prestigious DAAD artists in residence programme in Berlin. From 1997 until 2003, he served as artistic director and dramatic consultant at the annual festival “Evenings of New Music” in Bratislava, and in 2003 he chaired the ISCM’s Slovakian section. He has been teaching at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava since 1997. He currently performs with the ensembles he founded and is in contact with artists such as M. Hnat, J. Raska, P. Rovensky, D. Sadovská, M. Poláková and B. Young. He composes for the ensembles Arcana and Hilliard, and Slagwerkgroep den Haag, among others.
