How Forests Think

Martyna Poznańska and Peter Cusack
Audiovisual Report from Białowieża Forest
Vysočina Regional Gallery, Jihlava
Opening: 7 June 2018, 5 PM

This group exhibition focuses on the depiction of the forest in European art today. It is inspired by current scientific approaches to plants that accentuate “passionate immersion” in the surrounding non-human world, enlarging the sphere of representation, and cultivating the idea of the forest as an interconnected and thinking organism. In their pursuit to find a new approach to the realm of plants, new forms of cooperation among various fields and species emerge. The title of the exhibition comes from the book How Forests Think by anthropologist Eduardo Kahn, in which he asks what it means to be human in such an expanded world.

New in the Mediateka, May 2018

Hermit Foundation and Center for Metamedia Plasy

The media collection of the Hermit Foundation [HF] and Center for Metamedia Plasy [CMP] documents events and activities that took place during the 1990s in the (former) Cistercian monastery of Plasy, which were initiated by the HF and CMP. In spite of the importance and longevity of these activities, there is very little reference material available in the public sphere. We are continuing the long process of porting items into the Mediateka which heretofore have been housed only in private archives. Since the documentation of these events is extensive, this must currently be considered a work-in-progress.

Exploring New Musical Horizons in Bali-pimg_0007.jpg

Exploring New Musical Horizons in Bali

Martin Lauer

As the only predominantly Hindu island in an otherwise majority-muslim Indonesia, Bali can take pride in a spectacularly unique cultural environment – one which continuously draws on ancient past while standing firmly in the 21st century. In ancient times, it was primarily the influences coming from China and India which left its mark on Balinese culture, and later the Javanese Majapahit empire, which caused an influx of Javanese culture to Bali in the 13th and 14th century. However, throughout the colonial period, Bali was resistant to outside influences and Islam never left an imprint on its culture, as it did on other islands in Indonesia. Neither did Christianity, since Bali had long been overlooked by the West as underdeveloped, and it was only by the end of 19th century that the Dutch started to take active interest in it, driven by their effort to consolidate the East Indies.
