Extinction Rebellion

On Environmental Collapse and the “Creative Rebellion”
An Interview with Nils Agger

We speak with Nils Agger, an activist who has been part of the British RisingUp! network since its inception some two years ago, and who is currently active with the Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement. In the wake of the dire warnings of the recently published 2018 IPCC report, XR has been making big waves in the political climate, both in Britain and abroad. Their demands are simple: the UK must achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2025. We met Agger in Katowice, Poland where he was organizing as part of the COP24 summit.

Towards Restoration

A reflection on “The Most Beautiful Catastrophe”

The exhibition The Most Beautiful Catastrophe (2018, curated by Jakub Gawkowski) was held at Kronika gallery in the Silesian town of Bytom between December 3 – 14, 2018, just a short tram ride from Katowice’s International Congress Center where the UNFCCC’s 24th Conference of the Parties was held. The exhibition, curated by Jakub Gawkowski, featured numerous works of Polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian artists, and set out to “problematize the very concept of nature” and “rethink the future of the planet and the relationship between humans and the environment." It is this preoccupation with “the future,” which will constitute the main thrust for the following essay through contextualizing some of the impacts which art may have in staking out a navigable modus operandi for the societies of the future.

CESSE - Conference in Budapest

The Founding Conference of CENSE

Central European Network for Sonic Ecologies
Budapest, 29 November - 1 December, 2018

At the end of November, the Agosto Foundation had the opportunity to take part in the CESSE Symposium (Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology) in Budapest. This historic city, site of the first meeting of the possible founding of an international network for acoustic ecology, has been rocked by the unrest of Hungarian society revealed in recent protests and riots. Perhaps it’s no accident that, in a land governed in recent years by the egoistic Fidesz party, using repressive populist and nationalist policies, has initiated the creation of a society whose only program consists of acoustic ecology, with an eye on responsible approaches in the field of ecology, environmental sciences, art and education. MOME lecturer and musician Csaba Hajnóczy came up with the idea, and he also served a the lead organizer of the symposium.
